Molecular Medicine Ireland is offering places across institutions for this two-day workshop covering both scientific writing and presentation skills which will run on 24/25 June 2009 in UCC.

Learning objectives 

  • Understand the scientific publication process (including rankings, impact factors, citation rates, open access journals).
  • Be familiar with the organisation of a scientific paper and the principles of good scientific writing (including abstract writing and the design of good figures and tables).
  • Understand the process of submitting a manuscript for publication (from referees to proofs and beyond).
  • Be aware of publication ethics (including areas of misconduct such as falsification, fabrication and plagiarism).
  • Understand how to craft effective scientific presentations (including slide and poster design).

Programme
Day 1: Wednesday 24 June
The Workshop Programme on Wednesday 24 June will cover the entire scientific publication process, from the nature of scientific journals (including rankings, impact factors, citation rates etc.), to the structure of a scientific paper, principles of scientific writing, and the scientific publication process from referees to proofs and beyond.

Day 2: Thursday 25 June
On Thursday 25 June, there will be a presentation skills workshop, covering good presentation skills and the preparation of a good scientific presentation (oral or poster). There will also be an optional abstract writing and critiquing session, where students are invited to bring samples of their own writing for discussion and feedback.
